KYIV (Reuters) – Ukraine may import large quantities of American gas this year across the stations in Germany, Greece, Lithuania and Poland, the state operator in the state said, as Kiev is struggling with the impact of Russian attacks on its infrastructure.
The White House led talks to end more than three years of war that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Kiev said he was ready to accept the ceasefire proposal on Tuesday, but Moscow has not yet agreed to a deal.
American gas imports to Ukraine have the ability to enhance an economic partnership with Washington and the presence of American gas in storage facilities in Ukraine can deter Russian attacks.
“Ukraine can import at least 4 billion cubic meters of gas between April and October.
Reuters accounts based on the average gas prices find that the total import bill will be at least one billion dollars.
Among the total import across Europe, up to half of the liquefied natural gas that is shipped to European stations will consist instead of pipeline gas, and from this, Leipa said as much as possible from the United States.
“If we take the political side, it is better for us to bring as much LNG to Poland and gradually bring it,” Leipa said in an interview that was cleared for publication on Wednesday.
Leiba said that the geopolitical situation means that the United States of LNG can be preferred over the Qatari LNG competition, for example, provided that the price difference is not large.
It ends with the Russian crossing
Ukraine was a major path of pipelines in the field of Russian gas transportation until the beginning of this year, when the transit deal between the two countries ended, depriving Russia of transit fees.
Ukraine also has large installations for storing underground gas, and President Voludmir Zelinski said that Kiev and the White House discussed the use of sites to store American LNG that could replace some Western European gas that Ukraine relies on.
Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukrainian gas infrastructure – production facilities and underground storage facilities – in recent weeks, reducing gas production in Ukraine and reducing their ability to remove fuel from storage.
Ukraine produced 52-53 million cubic meters of gas per day before the last attacks, but a large source of industry said that the attacks reduced production by up to 40 %, forcing Kyiv to increase imports. Some production was restored, but officials refused to give updated numbers.
In preparation for the heating season in the winter 2025-26, Ukraine usually begins to pump gas in storage when the current demand season ends in April with high temperatures and consumption begins to decrease.
